Identify item hanging from rear of dou

Curious to know what this item would be called that hangs from the rear right side of a dou (modern reproduction, but must be something fairly common to be included). This one appears to be missing a half, so curious what would normally be carried in here.

Thanks in advance.

Are you saying that the dō is a reproduction? The object looks like a drinking cup, for saké or water; often they were hung from a Netsuké. Made from a coconut shell. No direct connection or in general with a dō, but someone has added it at some time, for functional or more likely decorative purposes and to give a historical feel.

(One photo does not really give the full picture though, so just guessing.)

thanks. the dou is a reproduction. I believe there may have been a matching half that is missing. The red rope may have tied them together.

I guess the two could have been used for drinking cups.  but was thinking there was a name for these things other than an unusual inro type thing.

Owning several versions of these, I am ashamed to say that I do not know how they are called. I have searched various websites but each photo has a different description.

Maybe start your search description with Netsuke, then sagemono, and you can find illustrations of cups on strings, although some of the enclosing ones with lids did contain food.

Yours is made of coconut, so add ヤシ or 椰子 (yashi)
