Volker62 Posted August 29, 2023 Report Posted August 29, 2023 rare early Tanto by Ikeda Yasumitsu 3 3 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 29, 2023 Report Posted August 29, 2023 That is quite gorgeous, Volker. And a good example for that question that pops up, now and then, wondering if there were WWII era tanto. Quote
Volker62 Posted August 29, 2023 Author Report Posted August 29, 2023 Yes Bruce these WWII era Tanto combined with the spirit of Bushido, were no less important in Japan during the war.... thank you! Quote

I assume these were ordered by officers from smiths similar to the way swords were ordered. Do you you have any information on that process or which smiths were involved? Also, in reference to the Yasumitsu, is that the original habaki? Thank you, John C. Quote
Matsunoki Posted August 29, 2023 Report Posted August 29, 2023 Volker, Bruce, John not trying to hijack but I am the current custodian of this Horii Toshihide Tanto that was awarded papers (was originally posted by a previous custodian). Might help any research ? If you view this as hijack please ask Brian to remove. Regards. Colin 1 Quote
Volker62 Posted August 29, 2023 Author Report Posted August 29, 2023 John after my research, these Tanto went to particularly succsessful gratuates of Navi high shool as reward... after hori Toshihide become to ill in 1943 This Tanto seems in original polish, also of the blades long Ubu ha, I'm not sure if the shirasaya and the habaki is its original? It originally came in shirasaya, so do you know if it was made for an Army officer or for a naval dirk? Or are they interchangeable? John C. Quote

Hi John, sorry but I cannot add anything to the original post. Came originally in old s/s so could have been wedding gift, special military gift, simply a special order by who knows who or why…….it’s frustrating. I also have this Tanto by Watanabe Kanenaga in case it helps you…..but it’s another guessing game re it’s history. 1 Quote

Bruno Posted August 29, 2023 Report Posted August 29, 2023 Volker, what do you mean by "papered" tanto. I can't see any NBTHK or NTHK papers. Quote

Hi John, I already sent these to another member who was also interested in this topic. The pictures are from the Yūshūkan Museum guidebook. Under the tanto it reads: "The dagger "Yasunori" used by General Anami when he committed suicide". Quote
John C Posted August 31, 2023 Report Posted August 31, 2023 Thank you, Simon. This is great information. John C. Quote
