WWII era Tanto  combined  with the spirit of Bushido

Volker:

I am doing a little research on these dirks and maybe you can answer a question or two. I assume these were ordered by officers from smiths similar to the way swords were ordered. Do you you have any information on that process or which smiths were involved?

Also, in reference to the Yasumitsu, is that the original habaki?

Thank you,

John C.

If you view this as hijack please ask Brian to remove.

Horii Toshihide

Yes, it does add to the research - thank you.

It originally came in shirasaya, so do you know if it was made for an Army officer or for a naval dirk? Or are they interchangeable?

Hi John, sorry but I cannot add anything to the original post. Came originally in old s/s so could have been wedding gift, special military gift, simply a special order by who knows who or why…….it’s frustrating.

I also have this Tanto by Watanabe Kanenaga in case it helps you…..but it’s another guessing game re it’s history.

General Anami Korechika (阿南 惟幾) committed seppuku with a tanto made by Yasunori Kotani on 15 August 1945.

(His tanto, blood-stained dress uniform, and suicide note are on display at the Yūshūkan Museum.)

Thank you, Simon. I'll follow-up on that as well and see if I can find any pics of it.

Hi John,

I already sent these to another member who was also interested in this topic.

The pictures are from the Yūshūkan Museum guidebook.

Under the tanto it reads:

"The dagger "Yasunori" used by General Anami when he committed suicide".
