John C Posted August 15, 2023 Report Posted August 15, 2023 I imagine this is a simple question to those who know, however I have not been able to find an answer through researching threads. Is it simply a friction fit (allowing for replacing the kogatana as it wears out) or were these glued in place? John C. Quote
O koumori Posted August 15, 2023 Report Posted August 15, 2023 The kogatana 'tang' area is usually bent slightly to provide a friction fit. You can also wrap it using paper for a tight fit. Dan K. 1 Quote

1kinko Posted August 16, 2023 Report Posted August 16, 2023 That’s basically how kozuka are made. Once the sides have been soldered together the carving begins- but any work on the outside will bend the outside shape unless it’s filled with pitch that gets rock hard. You can use steel inside but after the carving is complete you may find there was some compaction after all and you can’t get the steel out! So I fill the kozuka with liquid pitch and then insert a wooden kozuka and burn it out when I’m finished. Pitch holds very well. 1 Quote
Stephen Posted August 16, 2023 Report Posted August 16, 2023 Unless you plan on making it permanent I'd go with Dan K. Put a slight wave in it's tang . I've changed Kozuka a few times. Was happy I didn't have to deal with, the pitch. 2 1 Quote
