Bruce Pennington Posted August 10, 2023 Report Posted August 10, 2023 This is something added to the top of a Munehiro mei. Can someone explain it's meaning? Thanks guys! Quote
John C Posted August 10, 2023 Report Posted August 10, 2023 Bruce: Google app has what you wrote in the title as "last generation." But is this an extra stroke in the first kanji? John C. Quote
SteveM Posted August 10, 2023 Report Posted August 10, 2023 That bit isn't an extra stroke. It's just the uptick in that middle stroke (called the "hane" in calligraphy terms). But, it still is a mystery to me. 末次代 "latter generation(s)". A weird thing to put on the sword yourself. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted August 10, 2023 Report Posted August 10, 2023 Suetsugu is a famous name, with several generations, so it may simply mean ‘in the line of’ or ‘inheriting the name of’.(?) 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 11, 2023 Author Report Posted August 11, 2023 We've seen many blades with long, double lines that give both the smith's mei and a description citation of who the blade was made for, or good luck slogans about the war, etc. Think Suetsugu might be the guy the blade was made for? and he's possibly pessimistically saying he'll be the last guy in his family name, thinking he won't return from the war alive? Or, is there a link between Munehiro and the last Suetsugu? @mecox Quote
Copycat Posted October 4, 2023 Report Posted October 4, 2023 Hello, I have more information and questions for this sword. Is it ok to post here or should I open a new topic? Kind regards, Quote

Copycat Posted October 4, 2023 Report Posted October 4, 2023 The sword somehow came into my possession. See below information given by the seller. Extra foto's added later, including back of the tang. Is this blade traditionally made? The lightning is not really good to capture the hamon. I should make a picture in broad daylight. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 4, 2023 Author Report Posted October 4, 2023 Kees, Hard to tell from that last photo. Can you post a couple more, closer? Quote

Copycat Posted October 5, 2023 Report Posted October 5, 2023 Apologies. I got home late and it's dark again. It's really fall season. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 6, 2023 Author Report Posted October 6, 2023 Original wartime polish, apparently. There are tons of guys on this forum that can give you a solid opinion. I simply don't have the skill. Hopefully someone can address this for you. 1 Quote
