Baka Gaijin Posted August 9, 2023 Report Posted August 9, 2023 Good Afternoon I have a piece of what I believe to be Taisho era (1912 - 1926) calligraphy which was originally mounted as a hanging scroll. I would appreciate opinions please. Quote
Nobody Posted August 10, 2023 Report Posted August 10, 2023 I cannot read the calligraphy, but the signature looks to be 松亭 – Shotei. There was a calligrapher whose name is 田中松亭 (1915 – 1987) – Tanaka Shotei. I think that his style resembles your calligraphy. 5 Quote
xiayang Posted August 10, 2023 Report Posted August 10, 2023 On 8/10/2023 at 12:48 AM, Nobody said: I cannot read the calligraphy, but the signature looks to be 松亭 – Shotei. Expand I'm fairly certain that the character on the right is 爭/争 (indicating some sort of struggle or competition), but the one on the left escapes me at the moment. Edit: Having stared at it for a little more, I think the calligraphy may be "争友" which could be roughly translated to "a friend who gives critical advice". This concept goes back to the writings of the Chinese philosopher Zengzi (曾子), a disciple of Confucius (孔子) who lived in the 5th century BCE. 2 Quote
Nobody Posted August 10, 2023 Report Posted August 10, 2023 I guess that the character might be 竫 (sei) – peaceful. 2 Quote
