with the imporerishment after the economic and political decline after the fall of the shogunat it becomes a compelling necessity for many clans to sell everything and at least the beloved swords.

Be ashamed of oneself the provenance of the legacy sword was ruined and with its provenance the sword lost a big value. I read this in a book about a famous samurai and his Taima school sword.
