I have had this for awhile. I am having trouble with translation of kanji on bottom as well as the two figures displaying written words on sides of vase. Any idea of age and where made and artist would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

サツマ Satsuma
松田製 Made by Matsuda
如水画 Josui painting. (Josui should be the name of the painter depicted on the vase. His name appears on one of the paintings on the vase)

Chuck, your vase is from the very late Meiji period (and later) when such things were made in massive quantities to satisfy the demand from the many Westerners in Japan (and abroad) at that time. They were literally “production line” products, hastily potted and hastily decorated. If you have an interest in Satsuma earthenware go into Bonhams website and search for Kinkozan or Yabu Meizan or Hankinzan etc.  Some of it is breathtaking in quality.

There are several very good fairly recent books on the subject……try Amazon or eBay.

All the best. Colin
