Snooprobb34 Posted July 28, 2023 Report Posted July 28, 2023 Found this sword at my grandfathers house while cleaning. I’ve attached the letter that we found with it. I know nothing about swords but am very interested in learning the history and value of this sword as it’s been in our family for ages. I’m also curious what the process for selling something like this would be. Will probably keep it for its sentimental value, but curious nonetheless. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Very eager to learn more! 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted July 28, 2023 Report Posted July 28, 2023 Rob, if it be helpful to see the nakago (tang) if you can carefully remove the handle. Do not do anything to polish the sword on your own or to clean the tang when you have the handle removed. Whatever rust (patina) is there should remain. Quote
Geraint Posted July 28, 2023 Report Posted July 28, 2023 Dear Ray. Gene is the guy who wrote the letter, Rob is the owner of the sword. All the best. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted July 28, 2023 Report Posted July 28, 2023 Hi Rob, Here you will find a care and handling brochure you should read at least once: https://nbthk-ab2.or...ord-characteristics/ It will tell you how to safely remove and replace the handle. Like Ray said, do not try to fix anything, unless the bamboo or horn peg through the handle is missing or weak, in which case it should be replaced. And I disagree with Gene. Wide and bumpy temper line isn't necessarily better or more valuable. Cheers, Grey Quote
2devnul Posted August 18, 2023 Report Posted August 18, 2023 Hi Rob, I'm looking forward to see comments about the blade from forum experts (I'm just a newbie). Always love to see treasures being revealed. My advice, try to make and share pictures like the ones on below page (professional Nihonto shop): https://www.e-sword....katana/2310-1090.htm Quote
