Hello Nihonto Experts,

I've got a beautiful Gassan daisho made by Heianjo Okishiba Minamoto Nobuaki that I plan to send off to Japan for the creation of the Koshiare, and perhaps sayagaki. The Koshiare are going to be paired with the Ford Hallam set of Daisho fittings

I'm a bit worried though - I don't have any of the original export paperwork. Will my broker in Japan be able to re-apply for export paperwork for these swords? As these are Gassan, is an export license even needed?

Thanks for any insight you can lend!

Thanks Ray! I'll let Charlie know, as he's the one that'll be driving this particular show.

Now I just need to find the perfect set of Menuki and a Kogatana. :)

Pretty sure you'll find the perfect daisho menuki at the show. And probably a kogatana. I assume you need a kozuka too?
I am guessing, but I assume that once a sword is exported, it is written "off the books" in Japan, and anytime it returns it is re-registered as a new import and export. Not sure if it gets torokuso and is then cancelled on export again, or if it gets temporary import papers, perhaps someone can clarify.

Hopefully you're correct, but I'm going to try to be patient, enjoy the journey, and really wait for a set to jump out at me. I suspect that'll take at least 15 minutes! :)

If you see a set that jumps out at you and would pair well with the Ford Hallam set, please drop me a message and let me know.

Hi Chris, have you found your Menuki Daisho yet? What kind are you looking for?

I have not!

The Ford Hallam fittings are black with gold butterflies and bamboo. I would like the menuki to be either butterfly or bamboo based, although a set of Heron’s would also work. Black with lots of gold, or even solid gold for the material.

This daisho is modern, so age of fittings can be just about anything that catches my eye. I’m also fine mixing menuki - putting a butterfly and bamboo together would work.
