Mark S. Posted July 25, 2023 Report Posted July 25, 2023 There are a few WW2 news magazines for sale on EBAY. Just grabbed a few images of covers that might be of interest although not much detail really. Wasn’t sure where to post them. Sorry if these have been posted before. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 25, 2023 Report Posted July 25, 2023 Mark, Thanks for the photos. The bottom one shows the classic example of mixed Navy and Army parts that if the gunto had been posted on NMB, we would all be saying "Pieced together post-war!" It appears to be Army except it has a Navy kabutogane! We know that in the early years of the Type 94, Navy officers were carrying Army gunto until the Type 97 became widespread. But this is a mix. The second line, in black, at the top looks like a date "December, 8" but I cannot make out a year. Anyone see the year on this photo? @Kiipu @BANGBANGSAN @SteveM An interesting item is the wrap underneath the tassel where it wraps around the tsuka. Quote
SteveM Posted July 25, 2023 Report Posted July 25, 2023 Searched on Google and found the publication dates. From top to bottom 9/16/1942 7/12/1942 8/12/1943 1 Quote

Jcstroud Posted July 26, 2023 Report Posted July 26, 2023 It seems that mixed Army and Navy fittings were more common than we first thought. On 7/25/2023 at 4:35 PM, Bruce Pennington said: So what do we say, anyone, about this gunto? Expand Makes for great conversation pieces! Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 26, 2023 Report Posted July 26, 2023 Looks more like an early Type 94, the sarute barrel can sit quite low like a naval sword. 2 Quote

I can see now, the one in the photo is Army. With lighting issues, and for some reason, the bottom of the kabutogane obscured, it causes an appearance of the sarute hole being quite low. But it's not, and it's not round like Navy, you can just see the sculpted edges (forgive my poor editing skills!) and larger sarute barrel. Also, for some reason, the photo gives the appearance that the kabutogane is highly polished. 1 Quote
