Type95 Posted July 20, 2023 Report Posted July 20, 2023 Gentlemen, hope for opinion from a sword expert. I know what it is and it is exactly what I am looking for. So these Shin Gunto Type 95 with cooper hilt are offered to me. One of the sword is in excellent condition, numbered #812, the other one #1353 is in average condition. Well, I am a rookie and need help by experts. As I can see there is nothing that conserns me. Stamps good, numbers good etc. Is there anything that I‘ve overseen and that should be spoken about? Please have a look and let me hear your thoughts about. Thank you! Markus Ps. Pictures may be a bit mixed up, but that‘s my mobile. I also got some short films but don‘t know how to save and giv‘em to here. Will come soon Quote
Type95 Posted July 20, 2023 Author Report Posted July 20, 2023 More pictures I you need something else, please feel free to tell me! Quote
vajo Posted July 20, 2023 Report Posted July 20, 2023 Hello Markus that one looks legit. Overall the pictures are very small. Could you load up bigger ones to see the details like Stamps, Numbers, Kissaki, bo-hi and the tsuka? Ah sorry i see the inspection mark is direct on the number so i thought its 1xxxx 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 20, 2023 Report Posted July 20, 2023 I agree with Chris, Markus, they both look good. Buy them both!!! Ha! But if you can't, I'd buy the earlier one, but that is a personal preference. 2 Quote
zook Posted July 21, 2023 Report Posted July 21, 2023 Bruce/Chris - Markus shared these swords on FB, and I thought both of these swords are good, albeit one of them probably cleaned at some point. It is interesting though, because half the folks that commented on his post said they were fake (!!!!) ... so I recommended he post here to get opinions from you, shamsy, and everyone else Cheers, Dan 2 Quote
robinalexander Posted July 22, 2023 Report Posted July 22, 2023 Two questions for other 95 collectors before throwing my hat in the ring...... 1. Is the number 812 on the saya throat, upside down or is it that I just haven't seen any coppers with this orientation? (1353 looks ok) 2. Why do you think it is that the later numbered sword (1353) has an 'age appropriate' saya and tsuba finish but a pristine tsuka finish? They don't seem to match unless tsuka has been cleaned. Quote
Type95 Posted July 22, 2023 Author Report Posted July 22, 2023 Hello Dan, nice to have you here , too. Chris, here’s the link https://www.facebook...nk/2414390402076056/ Regard😅🍻 1 Quote
vajo Posted July 22, 2023 Report Posted July 22, 2023 I was accepted now to join the group and read the comments. No comment their was really helpfull because nobody explain the meaning. Markus you should upload better pics to judge it. The best way to see if its fake or not is to flash it with the camera. I should be glowing reddish from the patination and the tsuba should be shine golden. The stamps looks good. Note that the copper ones where patinated with niage rokkoshu. In the books is written that these were not patinated - thats not true. All copper work in Japan was patinated to get that look. The fakers didn't do that. Here is a genuine example (from the web) This one here was sold over an auction house and it is fake in my opinion. The tsuba looks bad, the habaki is thin and sloopy. The bo-hi looks crude, the clipper looks like cheap thin metal... That one is from the plimpton collection which i didn't like because of the paint job. But its a real one. That one is real too and was sold for $7500 (if its true) But as Bruce said. The experts and longtime collectors for these swords are Shamsy, BangBangSan, Kiipu, PNSSHOGUN and IJASWORDS (who has a really impressive collection) 1 1 Quote

robinalexander Posted July 23, 2023 Report Posted July 23, 2023 Tks for better pics Chris. On balance, I say they are genuine. All the best Markus. Quote
Type95 Posted July 28, 2023 Author Report Posted July 28, 2023 Gentlemen, again thx for your comments. I think they are ok, too. But I would be pleased, if those so called „experts“ (and I belive they are), would have a look, too. It‘s really a bunch of money for me but I am looking a long time for such a sword. …and I love them😁 If more pictures are needed, please tell me what you need and I will tell the owner. @Shamsy @BANGBANGSAN @Kiipu @PNSSHOGUN @IJASWORDS Quote
Kiipu Posted July 28, 2023 Report Posted July 28, 2023 I did not comment on the swords as the pictures are just too pixelated to make out the details. However, based upon the pictures posted by Chris above, they both appear genuine to me. I would like to point out that both Bruce & Rob own copper-handled swords and are more than qualified to pass judgement. Not sure if Chris or Dan have a copper or not. Disclaimers aside, the best person to ask is not mentioned above, mainly @Stegel. As I find serial number 812 the better of the two, I would like to see the following pictures if possible. Both sides of the handle. A clear picture of the scabbard throat showing the serial number. A picture of the scabbard drag or in this case the brass plug. And most important of all, an overall picture of the sword with the scabbard placed below the blade. 1 Quote

Stegel Posted August 2, 2023 Report Posted August 2, 2023 Congratulations Markus! A very nice sword, i agree with the others that both are genuine swords. Did you get both of them or only one? 2 Quote
