Brian Posted July 18, 2023 Report Posted July 18, 2023 Posting these for enjoyment before they get packed away to take to the SF show. Yes, these are up for sale. Thought the members might enjoy taking a look before they disappear into a collection somewhere. I have really enjoyed having a good hands-on inspection of these for the past week or 2. Wish I could add them to my own collection, but they are far above my pay grade. I think to have these commissioned nowadays would cost over $10,000? If you could get on the books. Found a new home at way under that. I absolutely love the way the f/k butterfly wings are done in different shades of MOP/abalone. And the mixed metal inlays are stunning. But it is the way the bamboo is presented that is my favorite. Ford apparently even made the gold foil seppa for these. Pity there were no menuki made, but can you imagine turning these into a daisho? Enjoy. 6 9 1 2 Quote

Larason2 Posted July 19, 2023 Report Posted July 19, 2023 They're gorgeous! I like Ford's use of mother of pearl/abalone. Really classy. Quote

DirkO Posted July 19, 2023 Report Posted July 19, 2023 Very cheap, and a no risk buy, seeing the scarcity and level of quality. Well done on the buyer and Brian! 1 Quote

ChrisM Posted July 21, 2023 Report Posted July 21, 2023 I bought these and can't wait to see them! The swords these are being paired with were bought from @Ray Singer. Ray's Instagram post for the blades: SwordsofJapan.com on Instagram: “Listing a high quality Gassan daisho made by Heianjo Okishiba Minamoto Nobuaki. Unlike most all daisho that are seen offered for sale, this…” In Ray's Words: Quote Listing a high quality Gassan daisho made by Heianjo Okishiba Minamoto Nobuaki. Unlike most all daisho that are seen offered for sale, this is not a married set. It is an original daisho, made as a pair. Nobuaki was a student of the famous Juyo Mukei Bunkazai (living national treasure) swordsmith Gassan Sadaichi. Like many Gassan smiths, Nobuaki focused on Soshu-den. This is an exceptional example, with the target being work in the Norishige style, these swords show resemblance to Hankei. This is an exceptionally well made set, now available. Please message for details. The Menuki will likley be a floral set and the koshirae will be made by some of the wonderful craftsmen out at the Bizen Osafune Sword Museum. I'm as yet undecided on the Kogagi, colors, laquer style, and details on the handle. This is my first modern set, and I'm exicted to both put it together and see the final product! 4 Quote
Brian Posted July 21, 2023 Author Report Posted July 21, 2023 Can't wait to see them finished. Perfect pairing. With this tosogu set, you have multiple options for menuki too. Bamboo...floral...butterflies. I think the owner will be very glad you are completing what he had planned...to mount them as a daisho someday. He'll be at the show so he can give you the story of how and when he got them from Ford. Congrats on both the fittings and the blades. Looking forward to meeting you at the show and will take good care of them until then. 2 Quote
