TenguSan Posted July 11, 2023 Report Posted July 11, 2023 Was in Japan recently and was told that a seller, who presented their swords as traditionally made nihonto, did not deal in any registered swords to avoid the hassle, and that purchased items could be taken away in hand the day of purchase. Can this be true? Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 11, 2023 Report Posted July 11, 2023 John, To my knowledge, this may work until the sword is going to pass customs. They will ask for a TOROKUSHO. If none can be presented, the blade could be confiscated. Quote
Brian Posted July 11, 2023 Report Posted July 11, 2023 It may be true...but it's certainly not legal there. But you can usually purchase a sword in Japan and take it away immediately with no issues. However legally you are supposed to do change of ownership and also de-register when you take it out the country. Quote
2devnul Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 Hello, Just thinking out loud. Isn't this (registration) required due to the fact that swords in Japan are treated like weapons (like firearms in EU)? It also doesn't matter if it is new or old blade. As long it is shinken (steel, sharp) and not iaito (alloy, dull) it needs proper registration or otherwise it can be confiscated. AFAIK if you buy a new shinken at dealer/shop you are getting registration papers right away. Quote
