Hi all,
Helping a friend with some of the items that will be coming with to the SF show.
Can anyone assist with this fuchi mei? I don't have any other pics of the work currently I'm afraid.
I believe it may be Yoshitaka but not sure if that is correct and if so, which one.
Much appreciated.

Yes, Komai Yoshitaka (Haynes 12144).  Name Teijiro; worked in Tokyo; born 1841 and died 1916.

Ah, The seller sent me some pics.
Wow....I think this is a stunning set. This is the sort of stuff that's coming to SF show. The BIG problem is that I have zero idea how to assist with pricing things like this. I am going to be calling on the collective membership and especially the dealers to possibly help with determining a lot of values of stuff. They need to be fairly priced. Seller doesn't want to give them away, but they need to sell too. Some stuff has papers, a lot doesn't. In cases like this one, they can be expected to be shoshin I think. How to set values? Hmm.

I moved this here, are there any collectors or dealers who can assist with a rough idea of how this would be priced at a sword show?
Have a ton of stuff to get ready for SF and really am out of my depth. Need to price them fairly, but to move. Not giveaway, just nice deal.

you could start by looking for comps on Yahoo!Japan maybe?  There is a tremendous number of sales of fittings through that site, and would give you an idea of the "spot" price since the items actually sold (except when the seller decides he doesn't like the price, but that's a yahoo!Japan foible...)

 

for example, I don't know how this  set compares to the set above (the YJ one was actually pretty good/better than the ones shown perhaps), but here's a set that is along the lines of the one your pal has:

Just start putting similar things to what you want to value on your watch list and see where they end up.

If you can't get help from our dealer friends here,

I would visit websites like Ginza Choshuya and Seikodo - use their items to establish a high end. Then go to Token Komachi or Usagiya and the like to establish the low end. If you don't find equivalent artists work you could at least compare quality of items to get a range of current values...

Thanks guys. Looks like there are about 50+ items.... ton of work!.. lol
I'm flying out to him to go take a look and make a spreadsheet in a week. Seems there is everything from Ford Hallam stuff to solid gold menuki, stuff that has papers and stuff that doesn't but is clearly decent.
About 4 sets of daisho koshirae...no blades there. Going to be interesting and fun. Most of this stuff collected 10+ years back and just put away. A lot picked up from DTI and auctions overseas.
I've been doing this a long time, but never has to really think about values. Also values here vs values in Japan vs values in USA vs values in Europe differ a lot.
@rkg thanks, that's a big help. How do you search for closed/sold items? Always battled navigating the Japanese sites a bit.

Grey, I intend to repack each one with foam so that they can't move around even a few mm. It's one thing that I constantly remind myself of. Thanks for the warning, it's a vital one for all to remember.

Very beautiful things, we take full eyes! The daisho look splendid, tsuba #44 is wonderful, as is set #31. But I think out of reach of my purse.

Very good advice though, don't ship in the box!!! I have had only two sent in their boxes and one did break out the peg but miraculously it didn't damage the guard, luck should not be part of the shipping experience!

The daisho are just koshirae, no blades though.
The goal is to sell. So selling some here beforehand is not a problem. I need to go take pics and see the stuff early next week and decide on prices.
But will entertain sales here. Obviously want to have most of it to make for a really good show, but a few items less wouldn't hurt.

Well, if he bought 10 years ago the yen was 10 cents above the dollar. Now it's -39 cents less. What ever he paid 10 years ago, just cut the price in half. That would be list price, not sale price.  Could be looking at 1/3 price fire sale.
