His common name was ""Kuniyoshi,"" and he became a Buddhist monk and adopted the name Sairen. He is said to be the grandfather of Samonji and was tasked with sword making as a member of the Hakata Dangi-sho, established to strengthen the defense of northern Kyūshū after the initial Mongol invasion.
