KINMICHI?

I don't think that's correct. I don't see how the circled character can be read as michi 道. It is nao 直. I recommend not assuming that because someone else said it on the internet that it is correct.

I think this swordsmith is Ishihara Kanenao 石原 金直. He is listed in Dr. Kim's translated list of Seki Tosho. The list also includes Kinmichi but it is 金道, not 金直.

The list of Seki Tosho also includes another documented Takayama-to swordsmith Hattori Masahiro. Also another documented Takayama-to swordsmith signed Ishihara Masanao 石原正直. Probably Ishihara Kanenao is same or related to the other Takayama-to swordsmith Ishihara Masanao. I am not aware of there being a Takayama-to swordsmith Kinmichi.

Matt,

I cannot discuss that with you as I have no knowledge about this sword making era. If you click on the above link, you will find a very similar sword, and the maker was mentioned as KINMICHI. I don't see "NAO" on the NAKAGO, but I am no expert.

Hi Bruce,

I think the confusion is due to the “nao” on the right being displayed as “nao” on the left on a computer. Here is a link for further clarification. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/直

Pardon the handwriting,

Xander

Deja vu. Kinda confusing as I can’t type the other “直” on my iphone. It automatically switches to the one on the left.

Is that a souvenir sword?

Yes, it's the one I used for the intro photo for the Mysterious Naval Landing Sword article.  I just never had it recorded in my files!  @Jcstroud prompted me about it and I got the photos from my old AF buddy through an email.

Here's the whole sword and upside-down anchor.

@Brian

Any chance of getting the Nao variant added to the "Kanji used in names" page?  You've got 2 versions there already, but not this one, and I've seen this a couple of times, or 3, on gunto.

Will see what I can do. Sometimes the installed fonts resist and change them. Will try.
