Hi、

This is Yurie.  I just came back from Japan a few days ago.  During this stay, I visited the Sano Museum.  In my book "Study of Japanese Sword", photos came from mostly Sano Museum possession and my father's.

While I was talking with the head of the museum and the director, we came across the topic of if anybody outside of Japan may be interested in visiting the Sano Museum and holding their swords in hand if we can

create an organized one-day trip to the museum.

I don't have any concrete plan, but a few possibilities

  • Some time in May or June 2024
  • Several hours of actually holding their swords and the curator talk.
  • Visit their exhibition and the Japanese garden, possibly lunch there.
  • Each person's cost will be decided later.  Or, if any of you can suggest to me what amount is worth coming or willing to pay.
  • I will be the contact.

The Sano Museum is about one hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen (bullet train), at Mishima station.  From there, take a taxi (about $12~13 or so) to the museum.  If anybody plans to visit  Japan sometime soon,

you can plan around this visit.

If I can gather up a reasonable enough number of people, I may seriously discuss it with the museum.

I know it may be too difficult to say yes or no with this vague plan, but I just want to feel if anybody is slightly interested in it or not at all interested in it.

I would like to hear your thought.

Thank you

Yurie

Amazing idea Yurie, and I would love to join such event in 2024.

For me June would be ideal as I think I have to time my trips to Japan to June as that is time when I can get vacation from work.

Would be amazing to also hear the curator explain about the items. And if possible, the in hand viewing would be super extra bonus.

Thank you very much for answering so quickly.

Do you think many people would be interested in?

If I am here next June, and the possibility is high at the moment, then yes, count me in. But I am not really 'outside of Japan'.

And the next question that someone will ask will be, "Are non-foreigners welcome too?"

Sure, that is no problem.

I thought the Japanese who live in Japan are not interested since they can go any time themselves.

Well, yes, probably a local branch of the NBTHK could organize a hands-on visit.

Fantastic idea, and I am sure many would be interested. We have quite a few members here in Japan, and if we can tag them as we remember them, they can say if they are interested.
Maybe @SRDRowson
Pity I wouldn't be able to make it, I think this US trip will use up all my savings. But I am sure others would love to go.

Hi Ken,

The talk by a curator will be in Japanese but I will be there to translate.

Thank you for reply.

Great idea Yurie
If the date is known well enough in advance, I would like to participate

An estimate from the end of May to the end of July 2024 could be the 28th Tokubetsu Juyo exhibition at the NBTHK
If it could be timed, it would be perfect

Yes, I would definitely be very interested in either month!

Thank you for the suggestion.

Dear Yurieさん

I am a new member here, but I would like to participate if possible. In case the number of participants is your main concern, I may able to provide some support, I would like to message you about it then.

Hello everyone,

After consulting with the Sano Museum's schedule, we decided on the visiting day on May 29th (Wed) 2024.

I am talking with them back and forth about the details of that day, like the Museum fee, meeting time, visiting Mishima shrine, etc.

The itinerary of the day will be posted soon.

Thank you very much for everybody's interest.

Thank you,

Yurie

Hi Yurie,

I am looking forward to the itinerary, and what is even more important, is the list of items we will be seeing.  It would be very helpful if we can do own research and study before seeing the actual items in hand.

Best Regards,

Hi Mr. Jussi Ekholm

I know you wanted it in June.

This is as close as I could arrange to June.

I hope you can arrange the day with your work.
