Tsuba characters

Hello fellow forumites:

I have a tsuba signed Kaneie and Yamashiro no Kuni Fushimi no Ju.There are two characters on the upper right side that exist because the material has been removed from the area around the characters. What do those characters mean?

Hi Piers could the tsuba be a part of a daisho with the other tsuba having the characters for Ayoyama?
