Request photos of the nakago. Out of curiosity, what interests you in this sword? The entire blade has been sandpapered, all the lines in the geometry of the sword have been rounded off (perhaps permanently ruined).

Like Ray said, photos of the nakago (tang) are important.  He claims it carries an "old samurai blade."  Photos will tell.

That’s my suspicion too, Hamish. There is no way someone put an “old samurai blade“ in these fittings. Just trying to be nice until the guy produces more evidence.
