vantique Posted June 9, 2023 Report Posted June 9, 2023 Spoiler Hello everyone. Here is a shortened blade... a wakizashi? It measures 9 and 1/4" from tip of blade to notch before the tang. Weighs 343 grams more or less and is signed. Would appreciate again all your comments on authenticity, origin, age and smith. Thank you and happy weekend! Sent Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 9, 2023 Report Posted June 9, 2023 Bizen (no) kuni (suriage). Difficult to assess to a specific individual in this condition but it's most likely an authentic mei for some Sue-Bizen smith. 2 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 9, 2023 Report Posted June 9, 2023 O-suriage!!! Is that a trick of the light, or has it been seriously togi-beri thinned by repeated sharpening? Quote
vantique Posted June 9, 2023 Author Report Posted June 9, 2023 Thank you for your reviews. Here are pics just taken. Quote
vantique Posted June 9, 2023 Author Report Posted June 9, 2023 I got to ask, is it an authentic, antique sword? This is for my notes for my personal, budding collection. Much appreciated, thanks! Quote
Brian Posted June 9, 2023 Report Posted June 9, 2023 I'd be concerned that it is the back end of a broken katana and that there is no boshi. That sugata and beefiness suggests it is vastly shortened, and with the mei present, that means it could have been reshaped from the front. Check for a hamon in the kissaki and turnback. 5 Quote
vantique Posted June 9, 2023 Author Report Posted June 9, 2023 Kissaki pics for your perusal. Thank you again. Quote

I only answered regarding the mei itself, but as far as the sword I agree with what is written above. This looks like a fragment. The lower part of a daito that was broken and the kissaki reinstated. 2 Quote

As Brian noted, look for turnback at the kissaki. The reason it is an issue, is because unless the blade is re-hardened, the tip is now being shaped into soft steel. This makes it an ineffective weapon. Just FYI. John C. Quote

DoTanuki yokai Posted June 10, 2023 Report Posted June 10, 2023 Someone took a beltsander on that what is a good way to destroy a blade. I would assume this is a real Nihonto that got some kind of amateur „repair“. Quote
vantique Posted June 10, 2023 Author Report Posted June 10, 2023 Thank you for affirming that it is a real nihonto, although mistreated. I really appreciate your reply. Quote
