Hi Jacob,

the important question is do you like it? its your money and effort that has bought it. Has it lived up to your expectation? What can you tell us about it?

first sight it looks like a smallish Shinto blade in reasonable polish there are obviously some openings in the hada which will detract somewhat from its commercial value. However the general polish looks ok and there is some activity in the hamon. I am guessing you can see a lot more detail of both hamon and hada in hand than you can from the images.

Over the years I have seen many first swords that are of much poorer quality than this so well done.

I am sure those more knowledgible than me can comment on the fittings.

Please tell us what you know about it from the seller.

Welcome to the slippery slope that leads to Nihon-To addiction!

Best Regards

Jacob - Congratulatons! Glad it was just dust!

First blades are a great entry to the wonderful (and overwhelming) world of nihonto. It drives us to learn sooo much and while we expand our knowledge we become addicted and want to learn even more. I hope you enjoy this blade and learn a great deal from owning it.

Jacob,

One slot on the scabbard (at 90/95%) = Kozuka slot - I have encountered exceptions but less than 5 over a few hundreds.

2 slots : one for kozuka and one for kogai, the kogai slot is less large than the kozuka one because the kogai is narrower than the kozuka

Quote+= can you please show me houwe a kogai slot looks like

as i want to spot it for the next time

Hello Jacob,

The kogai slot is, as far as I know always on the omote or outward facing side of the saya. the kogai slides in under the kurikata.

Thats the knob that the sageo or tying cord runs threw. Here is a picture although not the best of one in place. I hope this helps.

PS, Nice first piece----and so it begins!

Cheers,

PeterD
