John is the guy to ask, but from what I've learned (from him!) is:

- Double haikan (ahsi) or signs on the saya that one used to be there

- Centered chuso button

- Thicker tsuba

There are probably more signs, but these are all I know.

 

You can find centered buttons, like the one above on Type 98s.  So, this alone is not indicative of a gunto being a 94.
