Hmm looks like a tire alright! if I’m not mistaken. This particular car has seen many grocery trips! 
 

But on a side note, this was meant to be a little less serious post haha. Just thought trying to identify a sword by starting with minimal info as more of it is revealed through the week would be neat activity. I know it’s a bit strange, but It looks ridiculous because it’s meant to be :laughing:

You can identify a first class Kamakura blade based on a single photograph. If only because their utsuri tend to be quite unlike that in later years.

Gendaito - tough chance. Its too flat.

Nice catch guys! here’s the reveal.
 

So, a little background. I got this sword for a relatively cheap price from komonjo (don’t do this unless you %100 know what you’re buying) for study of how far modern reproductions have come and assumed it was gimei. So I had some pretty low expectations. Judging from how it looks, seemed consistent with some of the stuff komonjo sells. But seeing how I originally got this for study and reference, I’m not all that worried about the value for the blade itself. Feel free to take a look, I may be a little off.  Now this is no knock on komonjo, every once in a while he has some good stuff. Plenty of research is expected for how cheap his stuff is priced, regardless of authenticity. Mei says Ikeda Norihisa Saku(池田則久作) , now the hamon isn’t consistent with Ikeda Norihisa’s choji but I may be wrong, and after looking at the kissaki and nakago, I suspect gimei. Second opinions are welcome!

Just a reminder and PSA to fully research what you’re getting into. I was certain beyond a reasonable doubt this was a gimei repro before acquiring, and took a controlled risk in buying for gained knowledge. Seeing how it isn’t worth very much monetary value, it’ll probably stay in my collection for future personal reference.
 

I hope this has been educational and helpful, and serves as a reminder to be safe and research what you buy.

Steve, that’s very interesting because it probably shows whoever cut the Mei deliberately changed one Kanji to avoid any accusations of forgery, fakery etc…..they knew exactly what they were doing.

That’s another great point! Now the real question is, where exactly does komonjo consistently source all of these forgeries from?

No, what I mean is that there is a real swordsmith named Ikeda Norihisa (池田法久), which is the same exact name that is inscribed on this sword. So it does indeed look like a forgery of a gendaitō smith. 

 

What I was pointing out was - I suspect - a typo in Jaykob's post (Jaykob's 則久 should be 法久 because that is what is on his sword).
