Munetsugu Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 Picked up an interesting kamakura-bori (I think) tsuba, would I be correct in thinking the brass inlay would be a later addition? Interested to get peoples thoughts on it. Patina looks very old and nice. Thank you🙂 3 1 Quote

rkg Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 I've seen these pieces often put in the Ounin or heianjou zougan bins. I'm not sure I'd go with kamakura, because while the ring might have been added, maybe the "drawer pulls" around the outside actually did contain inlay originally? But the form is popular, it could also be some by other group that did inlay (aizu shouami, etc). Is that a shakudo fukurin on it? If so I'd go with that being added later. Soshin Posted April 14, 2023 Report Posted April 14, 2023 Nice tsuba thanks for sharing. I have a nice tsuba with similar large size, plate metal distribution (niku-oki 肉置), and style of craving (maru-bori 丸彫) without the brass inlay or the soft metal rim cover at NBTHK shinsa this year. I think it will be attributed to Kamakura (鎌倉). Not completely sure about your tsuba, but I think it would also get the Kamakura attribution if submitted to the NBTHK. The inlay and soft metal rim cover was all likely added later. Quote
