EMR516 Posted March 26, 2023 Report Posted March 26, 2023 Is it common to see on family blades remounted for use in ww2 to have patches of different rayskin? I have a NBTHK papered Shinto nobukuni wakizashi WW2 remount with a leather covered wood scabbard. I noticed under the tsuka Ito that the rayskin seemed to have what look like repairs & some look older than others? Appreciate any info since this would be my first pre ww2 period made blade. (Also interested in any details on the meguki) 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted March 26, 2023 Report Posted March 26, 2023 This looks like a new tsukamaki, I would assume that the repair work that you're seeing was done more recently. That said, field repairs also certainly did happen during the war. Best regards, Ray 4 1 Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted March 26, 2023 Report Posted March 26, 2023 Evan, I agree with Dave on the ito and same'. On another note - I see 2 Rinji in the background with double release buttons. I assume one of them holds a Nagamitsu with "阪2352" on the nakago? How about the other one? Something star-stamped? And have you posted it? Quote
dwmc Posted March 26, 2023 Report Posted March 26, 2023 Nice looking Nobukuni Evan. Yes, as Ray mentioned, it appears the Tsuka has been repaired with replacement same' and tsukamaki. As with Bruce, I'm also curious about your interesting collection. I not only see two upper grade Rinji Seishiki but also a Type 98 gunto. Mind sharing those also ?? Dave M. Quote
