NTHK nakago oshigata vs nakago photo

Hello,

I recently received NTHK kanteisho papers for a sword at US shinsa and was curious what determines nakago oshigata vs nakago photo on the certificate?  I have seen both, but was not sure on the criteria that determines oshigata or photo.

Oshigata are like fingerprints and very hard to fake - photographs are less so and are easier to "doctor" - Oshigata are always best...

Not sure if I am reading your question right, but I think most papers are now all photo at least at Hozon and Tokubetsu Hozon level and both the NTHK organizations.  Date has more to do with photo vs. oshigata than anything else (older papers are oshigata).

I have a newly issued paper with oshigata, which is what prompted the question.  It is not a problem or anything, I was just curious if there was criteria of some kind that determined oshigata vs photo on new NTHK papers.

Agreed, my NTHK origami from a Yoshikawa Eiichi led shinsa in 2003 has an oshigata whereas more recent examples all have photos.

I am a bit confused, but that is nothing new.  Would it be possible to get a picture of the papers and oshigata along with the score sheet?  I assume you are speaking of the San Francisco show?  Were they doing oshigata right there at the show?  Doesn’t seem like there would be enough time to make oshigata for every blade?

The one, true and original NTHK Still does oshigata as it always has. We use photographs for kodogu only. Yes, at least two members of the team are working on oshigata during all three days, they do double duty, kantei and if they agree they do oshigata. Keep in mind it is a rubbing of the nakago only not a full oshigata...

Apologies Thomas,

 

I mistakenly believed that both groups of the NTHK were using photographs now, but obviously it's just the breakaway group. 

(I have a very fond memory of Yoshikawa Eiichi Sensei taking a cigarette break from the shinsa in 2003 and asking to see my score sheet, before commenting that I should be happy because it was "a good katana". He is sorely missed.)
