I saw this nihonto come up for sale signed Shinano Kami Nobuyoshi ( Echizen ) and wondered what this smith is rated?

I wont say anything derogatory regarding this piece, but it maybe of interest to other collectors of nihonto.

Nigel, I think Bazza has edited and reoriented yours.:)

It's a nice looking sword with pleasant koshirae.  The handwriting isn't a good match so I would suggest buying it for what it is, not what it might be.

All the best.

Thankyou yes I realised Barry had cropped and enlarged one of the images, and I was joking when I said is it one of yours, so its a gimei, I thought the mei was not well cut. Its not for me, but I it posted out of interest as a discussion piece.

Even famous horologists were faked! Theres no end to this trickery if theres money involved, it spoils it for the collector to have to be so careful when buying anything old.

I can't see the mei very well, however my research into the Nobuyoshi family suggests they had a variety of signature styles. In addition, there were several dozen smiths using the Nobuyoshi name from the 14th to the 19th centuries. I believe there was a Showa Nobuyoshi smith as well. Since the Nobuyoshi group were average smiths, they aren't faked that often. But Echizen, the younger brother of the 1st gen, was considered the better of the family and would probably be the one to fake if one were so inclined.

Just my two cents.

Regardless of the mei, its not an unattractive nihonto, and would display well for a collector wanting a Handachi koshirae?, the Nagasa looks long.

But not for me, I've been there a long time ago.
