Eds Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Translation assistance. Thank you .looking forward to the next show similar to Vegas. Do you think there will be any Nihonto Swords at the West Coast Historical Militaria Collectors Pomona show mid April? 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Ed, KATANA MEI might be HIDETOMO, date perhaps 1939. Looks like an unusually big SEKI stamp, Bruce will tell you more. The blade pictures (please show them always tip-upwards) are not close enough to show HAMON or HADA, so no claim could be made if traditionally made (probably not) or industrially. Quote
Ray Singer Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 This is Ido Hidetoshi. There are a number of discussions on this smith on this board. 1942 (Showa 17) 3 Quote

ROKUJURO Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 I can't compete against Ray, he always has it correct..... Quote
Eds Posted February 20, 2023 Author Report Posted February 20, 2023 i think that the unusually big SEKI stamp is because i zoomed in on it also thank you for helping with the determination between traditional and machine made. i can include more pictures if necessary 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Ed, all photos - especially those of the NAKAGO - should be shown tip-upwards. Quote

ROKUJURO Posted February 21, 2023 Report Posted February 21, 2023 Ed, Thank you for these better photos! Because of the ground/sanded surface, I still can't see HADA but I would not exclude the possibility that it was water-quenched. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 21, 2023 Report Posted February 21, 2023 Ed, Could we get a shot of the whole sword with fittings for the files? Quote
Eds Posted February 21, 2023 Author Report Posted February 21, 2023 Thank you for your patience with the photos Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 22, 2023 Report Posted February 22, 2023 Ed, Looks like your saya was fitted with the Iida dust cover latch, right? Is the flip top missing? If it's intact, you should post some pics on Neil's nice thread Iida Latches. Also, what are those protrusions in the leather cover, on the flip side from the snaps? Quote
Eds Posted February 22, 2023 Author Report Posted February 22, 2023 Brian What i think I'm looking at is the leather retention assembly to secure the Saya and the Tsuka together while wearing. The Saya leather cover has shrunk irrevocably, typical when not properly maintained, and the leather retention strap pulled apart with a distance commensurate with the shrinkage of the Saya leather cover. Looking to replace the leather snap assembly if you know a good source. I'm tempted just to patch it. . . . . Thank you as always. Let me know if i missed the mark VR Ed 1 Quote
