Steffieeee Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Hi any chance anyone can hint at this signature? Obviously been shortened and had a hard life etc Quote
DMNK Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 My first impression : 廣平作 - Hirohira saku I personally don't know this smith and i might be wrong. Let's wait for the professionals. Best regards Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Would it be possible to take a couple more shots under very different angular lighting conditions Stef? Quote
Steffieeee Posted February 20, 2023 Author Report Posted February 20, 2023 I'll try my best hard to get it sharp really as it's very worn Quote
Steffieeee Posted February 20, 2023 Author Report Posted February 20, 2023 Maybe these help a bit 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 My off-the-cuff reading was 源平行 - Minamoto Hirayuki. I don't see anyone matching that mei though. Quote
Ray Singer Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Seeing Hira and Yuki in a mei, the next option I would think of is 波平行__ (Naminohira Yuki__). The first kanji doesn't look right for Nami though, so not sure... Quote
Steffieeee Posted February 20, 2023 Author Report Posted February 20, 2023 Thanks for the help. I thought it was a long shot. It is covered in a lot of grease, should I take this off ?could make it more legible. Obviously without changing the patina. I assume none of the sig is cut off/missing Quote
Steffieeee Posted February 23, 2023 Author Report Posted February 23, 2023 Degreased and zoomed .. 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted February 23, 2023 Report Posted February 23, 2023 Naminohira yuki___ Please do not do anything further to clean the nakago or try to improve visibility. The nakago condition was fine before, but now appears that the patina has been damaged. 2 Quote
Steffieeee Posted February 23, 2023 Author Report Posted February 23, 2023 And a couple more for luck Quote

Ray Singer Posted February 23, 2023 Report Posted February 23, 2023 As this point, I'm pretty sure it's a Naminohira sword. Naminohira Yuki ___. The blade is suriage and there's one kanji missing. Katana-mei. If the mei is authentic, then perhaps a Muromachi period blade. 3 Quote

Mike Stevens Posted February 23, 2023 Report Posted February 23, 2023 This signature looks similar to one from a thread from 2010. Quote
