strange orientation of aoi tsuba

Got this the other day, although i like it, it is not a treasure. The thing that I do not particularly like is the orientation of the plant appears strange.

Yes and no. To cover the length of the seppa-dai, the width of the leaves has been used. I like it.

Could this be a representation of two different mon? Maybe the joining of some large house represented by the leaf, and a smaller house represented by the three branches or fronds. Just some wild speculation Scott

This is the kiri (paulownia) mon, not Aoi mon, and yes, the orientation is a bit 'different' shall we say? Interesting.

I was thinking it was a precursor to the Chinese action flick where everyone holds and shoots their 1911 horizontal rather than vertical.
