Tsuba theme

I have just purchased this tsuba and I have no idea of the theme

Bamboo and chains

As it's a quite late tsuba it may be just due to the makers imagination

The photo’s got strange fuzzy edges Greg, so hard to judge. Chains would be hard to do, so it could be a demonstration of ability as much as anything. My first thought was the chain of a kusari-gama sickle.

Surely not nunchaku…(?)

I know it is a poor image but I wondered what the relationship was between the chain and bamboo

A very long shot, but twelve links are a more obscure Buddhist symbol which sometimes relates to interconnectivity.

As I am curious about theme too and hoping someone perhaps can help to "unchain" this mystery + I happen to have a couple pictures of this Tsuba, I would like to share them.

 

Measures: 7.10 cm x 7.10 cm x 0.50 cm

Sometimes a chain is just a chain - no sure there is a particular theme here.

 

Looking at dale's tsuba though it looks like part of an IRORI - the hanger over a Japanese fireplace - an odd thing if meant for a samurai sword...

It was suggested. of board that it is a Choshu tsuba circa 1600
