Tensho Posted February 4, 2023 Report Posted February 4, 2023 I'm fighting a losing battle with a junk phone camera and a setting sun. Anyone want to try and take a shot on what you think of this yari? I was thinking kanabo school, but partial mei doesn't add up to that. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted February 5, 2023 Report Posted February 5, 2023 Mei is the last thing to look at, Matt, although few yari that I've seen are gimei. Almost looks like sunagashi, but something doesn't feel quite right. Quote
Gilles Posted February 5, 2023 Report Posted February 5, 2023 The red laquered flame groove is very unusual. Long karakubi is the sign of an old blade. The blade seems to have gone through an acid treatment. Some pictures of the nakago will help. I agree with Ken, something doesn't feel quite right. 1 Quote
Tensho Posted February 5, 2023 Author Report Posted February 5, 2023 The kusabi-hi isn't that unusual. I have only seen a few yari that have it though. Mei is very badly corroded. Looks to have been a 5 character mei at one point. Quote
Gilles Posted February 5, 2023 Report Posted February 5, 2023 You are right, such grooves are not unusual. I wanted to say that it's shape appears to me peculiar. The nakago seems to be very old, possibly koto era. Quote
Mark S. Posted February 5, 2023 Report Posted February 5, 2023 I would agree older, but I also agree it looks to have had an acid etching and the nakago has been sanded down or something else to try to expose mei. Unfortunately there are a couple eBay sellers who are notorious for both these practices. I can ‘almost’ understand MINOR cleaning up RED rust (only) on nakago to view mei, but there are few blades that exhibit that type of activity without some serious acid help. Quote
Tensho Posted February 5, 2023 Author Report Posted February 5, 2023 This is the nakago without direct sunlight. I can see why the photos in sun are making it look weird. I did clean the mei area with ivory as it had a lot of active rust. I bought it as mumei . And for the heck of it,, what it looks like without direct sunlight. Quote
