Swords Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 I thought this sword was interesting but like to see what others think Also what is this Ujifusa yasuki steel used is it any better than Showa oil quenched or dose it matter To me Gendaito water quench is probably better ? Is this actually compared to Fukumoto Amahide,? I had to take 2 pictures of the description so it may be hard to read in order Quote
David Flynn Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 The photo's aren't good enough to make a decent opinion. However, it appears to be oil tempered. Quote
Okan Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 Steven, will appreciate if you can post these questions under Military Swords of Japan. Thank you. Quote
Swords Posted February 1, 2023 Author Report Posted February 1, 2023 Why is for general discussion Quote
Swords Posted February 1, 2023 Author Report Posted February 1, 2023 I was looking for more info about the steel what makes it special I checked John slough and listing 3rd seat which I find strange for oil quench but I’m no expert on this Quote
NewB Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 Steve, @Okan suggests that as there is a designated area in the forum for blades in military outfit where most of the experts in the field gravitate around. I'm sure the post will be moved there by an admin eventually. Just a thought P.S. Slough's book has examples of medium to high grade showato also. oil quenching is a non traditional but IMHO safer way to harden hot steel that eventually transforms into a curved blade. Cheers J. David Flynn Posted February 2, 2023 Report Posted February 2, 2023 Some Smiths, made Gendaito and Showato. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted February 2, 2023 Report Posted February 2, 2023 The sword has a Sho stamp, not Gendaito but still well made by the looks of things. 2 1 Quote
BANGBANGSAN Posted February 2, 2023 Report Posted February 2, 2023 It was made of 安來鋼(Hitachi Metal Ltd),not 玉鋼,that's why it has 昭 stamp。 Quote
Swords Posted February 2, 2023 Author Report Posted February 2, 2023 What dose that mean and is the special Is steel better then regular Arsenal or the same or as good as tamahagane Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 2, 2023 Report Posted February 2, 2023 English Before the war, Kisaku Ibe of Yasugi Steel Co., Ltd., the predecessor of Hitachi Metal Yasugi Factory, and others developed high-speed tool steel with electric steel for the first time in the East with the cooperation of Matsue Electric Light, establishing a further brand in modern steelmaking. Currently, it is developed at the Hitachi Metallurgy Laboratory in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture and is defined as the names of all special steels represented by tool steels for high-performance machines, such as blades and molds that require the strength of materials manufactured using advanced technology. These are registered trademarks as "YSS Yasugi Speciality Steel" (YSS stands for Yasugi Speciality Steel). 2 Quote
