GoldenDrachen Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 Hello everyone! I hope you guys don't mind me asking stupid questions. It will be the case for a while. Sorry. Trying to choose style of the tosogu I would like to collect. I mean not the motif, but more like shape and composition. (subject is still in review) I know that I like asymmetrical composition with some characters, animals etc For a while I will be guided by my intuition only, so would like to have as much info as possible on the items i pick. here is the one: I understand that man is Jittoku. Sweeping our souls clean. My questions please : 1. How this shape is called? 2. What time period is this piece? 3. Was it created as an art object, or it is a practical piece? As always any extra comments will be appreciated PS I have purchased some books, will gradually learn.... Paid 5€ for this one and another one, a little bit more expensive Kind regards Vitaly Quote
ROKUJURO Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 Vitaly, that is a nice iron TSUBA in MOKKO GATA (shape). Motif is indeed (KANZAN and) JITTOKU (see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanshan_and_Shide ). It looks like a WAKIZASHI TSUBA, and I think it was made around 1800 or a bit later. I think we could call it a practical art item, as it was used on a serious sword but with an artistic intention. Condition is quite good, so you can enjoy this TSUBA for quite a while! 2 1 Quote

Spartancrest Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 Hi Vitaly, the second book is "Toso Soran" by Torigoye Kazutaro (1978) [What sort of money did you pay for it?] Another good book in both Japanese and English is "Tosogu no Kansho" by Shoyukai. [1982] It is not a very thick book but good images. Also "Tsuba Meisaku Shu" by Homma & Sato [1963] a bit harder to find and no doubt more expensive. Some of the more common shapes you will find in tsuba. Quote
