At a first glance A lot is off - yasurime, nakago jiri ..

But as everyone usually would suggest - same quality photos of the blade in as much detail as possible.

Cheers

Lucas,

the first shot was enough to see that this is unfortunately something non-Japanese. It is not the typical TANTO-type blade (it has a SHINOGI), the MACHI (notches on the blade) under the HABAKI do not align, the NAKAGO is wrong, the HAMON is a fake one, the signature makes no sense,  the lacquer is interesting but wrong, the KOGATANA (little utility knife) is wrong....

In addition, a SEPPA (shim) seems to be missing.

I hope you did not pay much for it. If the seller advertised it as Japanese, you may try to give it back and get your money back so you could buy some good books before you buy a sword again.....

Thank you very much for your reply! This tanto is for sale at a German auction house in Cologne, before a possible bid I wanted to hear a professional opinion because I was already skeptical. It is a shame what is offered as "original" at serious houses. By the way, the estimate is 5,700 € (about $ 6200).

Lucas,

that would be a ridiculous price! In my opinion, € 57.-- would already be too much!

Is it Klefisch/van Ham or Lempertz? They should know better!

How unfortunate for Mr Walter Bruno Brix that his name should be proudly appended to such a load of twaddle, and given the nature of the internet there for all time!  At least in the UK no one admits to having written the catalogue entries.

All the best.
