Tensho Posted January 25, 2023 Report Posted January 25, 2023 Trying to find out which clan these go with? Saya is covered in them, but they're almost impossible to see without cleaning the old laquer off. Quote
uwe Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 Matt, the mon is depicting three coins (三つ折り銭). Couldn’t find an exact match at first glance. Might take some time… 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 三文銭 San Mon Sen looks close. www2.mahoroba.ne.jp/~adsys/kamon/zeni.html 1 Quote
Nobody Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 Looks like 三つ盛り裏銭紋 (mitsumori urasen mon) - Three piled back of coins. Ref. 三つ盛り裏銭紋(みつもりうらせん):家紋のいろは (irohakamon.com) I did not find specific families with the crest. 1 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 One way of looking for a family is by working backwards. Every approach holds a slim possibility of success. Attack from all angles, and never give up hope! In this case we immediately remember the famous roku mon sen 六文銭 six coins Mon of Sanada Yukimura. Could your three coins not be in some way related to the Sanada family? Which area of Japan used coins in their Mon, i.e. is there some geographic aspect to add to the plot? In the meantime there are books out there which may contain a hint. Step by step one gets to Rome. 2 Quote
Toryu2020 Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 There is a facebook group for Kamon that is very good at identifying and providing information - you might ask there... -tch 1 Quote
uwe Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 Moderated by Mike, yes Thomas The closest I can get so far (Not the mon in question, I know....) "Nonoguchi" and "Watanabe" family, what ever that means. The very same coins Matt posted, but in a ring, are affiliated with "Watanabe" according to this book. However, as Piers said, it might be a long way if not impossible to pin down. About the areas, I found Nagano, Gunma, Shizuoka, Saitama, Aichi and Kagawa.... 1 Quote
Toryu2020 Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 A single mon needs to be really distinct if one hopes to pin it down to any one family let alone individual... "step by step..." -t Quote
Tensho Posted January 26, 2023 Author Report Posted January 26, 2023 Thanks for all the replies! I came across the Sanada clan when I originally started looking. As far as the origin, the torokusho states it was registered in Saitama prefecture which fits with other similar kamon. I doubt I'll be able to pin-point it, but I'll definitely be searching. Quote
