PietroParis Posted January 25, 2023 Report Posted January 25, 2023 It appears that, when a search returns more than one page of results, going to the next page counts as a new search. Hence, it is not possible to quickly scroll the list of results without triggering the waiting time. I find this unnecessarily punishing.
Brian Posted January 25, 2023 Report Posted January 25, 2023 Pietro, I can't duplicate it, since being an admin has the advantage of not having a delay. But it's possible. The trouble is that 15 years of forum posts, with hundreds of thousands of posts is very resource intensive on a search. The database really takes a hammering. So a delay is necessary, or I have to limit searching to the past 5 or so years back. Don't want to do that. Guests have a 30 second delay between searches. I have just dropped members to a 20 second delay. I really try to use Gold membership as a fund raiser for forum bills, so that drops it to only 10 seconds between searches. I know $30/6 months or $60/year isn't trivial for many, but that really does have some benefits and I do hope more will consider it as a useful tool. I will look into this to see if it can be improved, but please do consider it if you do many searches.
PietroParis Posted January 25, 2023 Author Report Posted January 25, 2023 I understand that a search over 15 years of posts can be very resource-intensive, and I see the point of slowing down multiple searches. However, once a search is done, are new resources really needed to access the next page of results? This looks more like a glitch to me.
Brian Posted January 25, 2023 Report Posted January 25, 2023 No, because the system will be programmed to only return a certain amount of results. It won't automatically load every search result, since for example, if you searched "sword" it would have to load and index hundreds of thousands of results. Server memory would be overloaded instantly. Instead, I expect the database only "loads" the first page of results. When you hit page 2, it performs a second search, this time excluding the ones already delivered and giving you X amount of further results. At least this is how I understand it. You can easily fine tune your searches to narrow down the number of results, by using the advanced search feature to narrow down the threads with only more than x number of replies...what date it was posted, date created, which forums you are searching through, etc etc. That should vastly reduce the number of pages.
Bruce Pennington Posted January 25, 2023 Report Posted January 25, 2023 I don't have any trouble, but I'm not sure exactly how you are going to each new thread. I will check a thread in the search results, then hit the Back Arrow at the top of the browser to get back to the original search results. Then click on the next thread. I don't get any "Must wait X secs before a new search" message that way.

What Brian writes above clarifies the issue for me.
