DTM72 Posted January 21, 2023 Report Posted January 21, 2023 This one has a lot of us stamped. So much to translate it is hard to figure out what it is actually saying. Please help! Quote
Kiipu Posted January 21, 2023 Report Posted January 21, 2023 Obverse 安永二巳年 I think this is the year 1773. 運者有天 善長者戟. 春日造. @BANGBANGSAN 2 Quote
DTM72 Posted January 22, 2023 Author Report Posted January 22, 2023 Any idea on the other? The grass type script is tough. I bought the sword today regardless of the signature. Quote
SteveM Posted January 22, 2023 Report Posted January 22, 2023 運者有天 善長者戦 But the meaning is lost on me, and nothing comes up in a search. Two four-word idioms, perhaps expressing some truism of man? Reverse side 王子三狐 No idea of the meaning. 藤原釼加黄金 Fujiwara ōgon wo tsurugi ni kuwaeru (Fujiwara added gold to this sword)? 東都囗囗 宗次 正囗 Location in Tōkyō, Munetsugu, and another name Masa- Unusual in that some characters are written in block type, while others are in grass script. Unsure who the maker is. Collaboration between Munetsugu and Masa-? 2 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted January 22, 2023 Author Report Posted January 22, 2023 @SteveM Mike Yamasaki was thinking the same thing. A collaboration between two smiths but could not figure out the remainder. Quote

DTM72 Posted January 22, 2023 Author Report Posted January 22, 2023 From Facebook, 王子: prince 三: three 狐: fox 運者有天 善長者戰 It is a Classical Chinese covered to Japanese meaning: For those with fate would be awarded by gods For those talented worriers would prevail in battles. Quote
DTM72 Posted January 22, 2023 Author Report Posted January 22, 2023 Will take some good pics in the next couple days. On plane now and won’t arrive home til late tonight. 28”+ katana with masame hada that almost become ayasugi in spots and LOTS of sunagashi, tobayaki, inazuma, kinsuji, etc. Quick tease pic from hotel last night added below. Gotta go now, plane is on the taxi way to the runway. Dan Quote
Kiipu Posted January 22, 2023 Report Posted January 22, 2023 The characters 春日造 could possibly be referring to a style of Shintō Shrine. Kasuga-zukuri One possible Chinese meaning of 運者有天 善長者戰 is "the lucky ones are good at fighting with the elders." 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted January 23, 2023 Author Report Posted January 23, 2023 She’s going to shinsa in Chicago so hopefully I’ll get some help, and papers, at that shinsa. 1 Quote

Kasuga-zukuri .............................. 春日 (haruhi?) is a part of date inscription in this case. 安永二巳年、春日造 - Made in An'ei 2nd Mi year (1773), a spring day. 1 3 Quote
Kiipu Posted January 23, 2023 Report Posted January 23, 2023 Wow, I think you nailed it down. The date was continued over into the adjacent column and thus the full reading is 安永二巳年春日造 as you indicated. 2 Quote
DTM72 Posted January 23, 2023 Author Report Posted January 23, 2023 You guys are 110% awesome! Got home last night just before midnight. Unpacked all 4 matchlocks, all the swords and inspected my new katana closely. I knew it was long, but actually put a measure to it. 29.250" (74.3 cm) She's a healthy girl. 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted January 23, 2023 Author Report Posted January 23, 2023 One last piece to this puzzle. The kanji that looks like MICHI 道 but is different. The parts on the left look the same but the parts on the inside are different. To me Michi looks like a person pushing a pallet jack with a stack of pallets and a see-saw on top. The character that is giving me trouble is the person pushing the pallet jack, but has a stick figure wearing a dress. Like Mori 林 is two sticks wearing dresses, but I only need one wearing a dress, riding on the pallet jack. 正 = Masa 宗 = Mune ? 次 = Tsugu Quote
DTM72 Posted January 23, 2023 Author Report Posted January 23, 2023 So Masatsugu and Munetsugu with the two different ways of writing tsugu? @SteveM Quote
SteveM Posted January 23, 2023 Report Posted January 23, 2023 Yes, although bear in mind its just a slightly educated guess at the 正継 . Quote
DTM72 Posted January 23, 2023 Author Report Posted January 23, 2023 And I completely forgot about these four. A place in Tokyo? 東都 = Toh = Eastern 都 = to = Capitol ? = ? ? = ? 越中 Etchu ? Quote
SteveM Posted January 23, 2023 Report Posted January 23, 2023 No idea. Etchū would be an unlikely thing to write after Tōto, and it feels slightly off. 龍 in grass script is very plausible, but the one after that leaves me in the dark again, as does the 王子三狐(抓)written next to it. Quote
