pjay101 Posted January 17, 2023 Report Posted January 17, 2023 Hello everyone. I picked up a couple of swords from a mom and pop antiques shop in Ottawa about 20 years ago. I always assumed they may be military swords, Japanese (by assumption only) but having seen very similar looking swords. I'm wondering if I stumbled on a really cool find. One of the swords has a partially worn off engraving and a serial number, while the other does not. They look to my un-trained eye to be either Kyu-Gunto or really nice replicas. Thanks in advance. Kind regards Paul. Quote

Hi Paul, I'm afraid these are cheap and nasty Chinese replicas. Sorry for the bad news. This is also not the place to post. Try creating a new thread and you'll get more responses and attention. Brian or a mod will probably delete or move these posts when they notice. 1 Quote
Brian Posted January 19, 2023 Report Posted January 19, 2023 Not really nice replicas. These are terrible. About the worst you can get. Sorry, but not even close to real or nice. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 19, 2023 Report Posted January 19, 2023 Sorry about this, Paul. Looks like you got double-bit with 2 fakes. After 20 years, not likely to get a refund. This is the second time I've seen this faked blade pattern in Kyugunto/Type 19 fittings. You can see other examples from this shop in the Fake Swords page of the Gallery. It's numbered "32076". I have 2 others with the exact pattern and "46127" serial number on file (now 3). Quote

MOST of us have made dodgy purchases at one time or another in this hobby. If you want to continue with it, just use this as a teaching moment and try to educate yourself on the real stuff. Like all hobbies, we pay for swords or we pay for a lesson. It's never a loss! Regards, John C. 1 1 Quote
Baba Yaga Posted January 23, 2023 Report Posted January 23, 2023 It seems the treasure hunt is what clouds peoples judgment and prevents asking before leaping. Nihonto is a VERY academic study / hobby and doesn't favor the unexperienced. 1 Quote
