Spartancrest Posted January 8, 2023 Report Posted January 8, 2023 For some time I have been collecting "tsuba related objects" - Items that are decorated with tsuba images but not of a Warlike nature and the breadth of items is staggering. A paper could easily be written just on the place in Japanese culture that tsuba take outside the role of the sword. Some items I turned up just today: Tabletop cabinet Tsuba censer cover Koro or incense burner Amalgam of tosogu parts as decoration 5 4 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 8, 2023 Author Report Posted January 8, 2023 More items: Tsuba decorated leather "Bill-fold" 1970s-80s Gold lacquer inro Wood and metals netsuke "Kashigata" wooden cake molds 4 1 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 8, 2023 Report Posted January 8, 2023 There is one Tsuba in this photo. (One of the three tables of Bingo prizes this evening.) The one lower right is a Bizen Yaki ceramic. 3 2 Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 8, 2023 Author Report Posted January 8, 2023 Piers, we would get a visit from the police if we had Bingo prizes like that - but can you save me a seat! ROKUJURO Posted January 9, 2023 Report Posted January 9, 2023 Dale, I have to confess that I don't like many of them as they are not made as close copies. Some look as if the manufacturers had never seen a genuine TSUBA. And as I just have a few keys to hold together, I think I will leave them all for you and stay with real TSUBA! 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 9, 2023 Report Posted January 9, 2023 A couple of years back I spotted a tsuba wrapped tightly in old grimy string around the Hitsu ana and seppa dai, making it a useful Netsuké-like object for hanging things from, but hard to tell what kind of Tsuba lay underneath. No-one showed much interest in it, so I bought it as a junk ‘decorative object’, and later removed the string. 7 1 Quote

Spartancrest Posted January 12, 2023 Author Report Posted January 12, 2023 This one is a tsuba imitating something else - an abacus - perhaps it belonged to a merchant? Count the number of dead after a battle? Liked the sound of rattling metal? and another tsuba inspired inro 4 2 Quote
rematron Posted January 12, 2023 Report Posted January 12, 2023 Do the abacus beads actually move? Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 12, 2023 Author Report Posted January 12, 2023 Yes they move but you might need a microscope to do any calculations! I am surprised the thin wires are still intact, must have been a fun build! 1 1 Quote

rematron Posted January 12, 2023 Report Posted January 12, 2023 The tsuba belt buckles are interesting to me because I have often considered that tusba in medieval Japan were indeed a lot like belt buckles, especially those associated with Spaghetti Westerns: Belt buckle to hold up the gun belt VS tsuba actually part of the 'gun'. Both worn in the same general location on the body and both expressing the individuality of the wearer. 1 Quote
