Grasshopper Posted January 4, 2023 Report Posted January 4, 2023 Hello all, my father in law gave me a Tanto and was after some information on its history and age. It was found behind a wall in the 60’s or 70’s during renovations and given to my father in law in the early 80’s. Would like to find out about it before I decide how to proceed in cleaning it up. The writing on the tang is a bit hard to see and will give it a light rub latter to see if it will stand out a bit better. Hopefully someone here can help. Thanks. Quote
Misconstrued Posted January 4, 2023 Report Posted January 4, 2023 Don't clean it up or do anything to remove patina from the tanto. This will greatly diminish it's value to collectors. Others will tell you more about it's history and what you can do to help preserve it. 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted January 4, 2023 Report Posted January 4, 2023 As said above, please don't do anything at all to disrupt the patina from the nakago. The nakago should never be rubbed or cleaned. The mei might be Kunitoki (國時), but not certain. The blade has a shape resembling Enju kikuchi-yari tanto. 2 Quote
