Gendai Posted January 2, 2023 Report Posted January 2, 2023 (edited) I have checked through the "Japanese sword index" already and I am wondering if there is any other things that might tell me if it is real or fake i.e. markings, serial numbers, and other things that might signify if it is fake or not. Reason for needing this is that I am planning on buying one for historic value. Edited January 2, 2023 by Gendai tag Quote
Shamsy Posted January 2, 2023 Report Posted January 2, 2023 The board will tell you if you ask. There are many indicators of fakes. Lots of details can point to a sword being a fake. Lots of those same details apply to real swords. You need to consider the whole sword to make an informed decision. Look through the fake thread for example. Read books. Ask questions. It's mostly an experience thing, you just get a feel for it after a while. 1 Quote
Brian Posted January 2, 2023 Report Posted January 2, 2023 There are plenty of fakes...some very good. Post pics here. That's the best way. There is no checklist that is going to tell you. It takes years of study. Go through the Fakes thread and see what indicators do tell a real one from a fake, that's a good start. Avoid anything with a serial on the habaki or any etched symbols on the blade. 2 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 2, 2023 Report Posted January 2, 2023 What the guys said above. If you're considering a buy soon, then posting is your best defense. If you have time to study, start with Ohmura's pages on the Type 95. Only 5 of them, but some immaculate examples of workmanship and stampings for comparison to a prospective item you might be considering. Non-commissioned officers Gunto - Ohmura site Quote
Bridges Posted January 3, 2023 Report Posted January 3, 2023 Hey Gendai, as Bruce pointed out, Ohmura is a great resource. Dawson’s Swords of Imperial Japan is a must have book. 1 Quote
