Itomagoi Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 Hello everyone, do I see that correctly and it is Shingane (core steel)? Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 Peter, this appears to be hardened areas extended off the hamon (an extension of the yakiba). Shingane does not look like this. 4 Quote
Volker62 Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 with reconnizable nioi, nicely circled nothing to do with core steel Peter 4 Quote
Itomagoi Posted December 31, 2022 Author Report Posted December 31, 2022 Thank you Ray and Volker. And again I have learned more about nihonto. Quote
Jacques Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 This is not a sign of quality because it indicates a bad mastery of tsuchioki. Quote
Itomagoi Posted December 31, 2022 Author Report Posted December 31, 2022 Okay, but this is Shingane. :-))) Quote

A fukure can also happen totally within the kawagane. I have seen swords where the fukure was removed though additional polish, and the underlying steel had not exposed the shingane yet. 2 1 Quote
Volker62 Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 I've seen some with "patched steel " umegane" that was inserted into the steel surface Quote
vajo Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 This looks cool. You can make a glas over it and everybody could look inside the blade. Quote

I have seen similar pictures in an article about slag being left in the steel during the forging process. Maybe just under the "skin" and brought out by the polishing? John C. Quote
