SwordGuyJoe Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 There is a katana posted on eBay and the seller is stating that it is 250 years old or older. When I look at it the hamon tells me that it is a Seki blade and the nakago tells me that it is Showa era. Am I wrong? http://cgi.ebay.com/OLD-Japanese-SAMURA ... 0433325874 Quote
Gunome Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Hello, I saw it yesterday and make myself the same reflexion ! For me it is also a modern blade. I think it is 1rst part of 20th century. Looking at the nakago and yasuri-me often used in a work of 20th century... for me you are right :D Sebastien Quote
Stephen Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... tsupported lots of broken links of late, see if the above works. sometimes very hard to judge a blade from photos...we'll most of the time....hamon does have that high point hardness of gendai. Guest nickn Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 oil quenched showato as stephen said it has the hard points at the top of the gunome to get the registration papers wouldn`t the seki or showa stamp have had to have been removed? Quote
Stephen Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Nickn don't think it ever had a stamp, lots of gunto without stamps, don't think well ever know the full truth on what was accepted for the war with stamps or if true gendai were some times commissioned then stamped. We have to have the blade in hand to tell, then sometimes its hard, also no cut on dry on this blade being oil quenched. Quote
Guest nickn Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 stephen yes i have and have owned a number of gendiato with stamps i had one polished and papered in Japan after i removed the stamp assuming it is oil quenched i am surprised it got a registration certificate who gives out the certificates? Lorenzo Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Something I see; The brass habaki looks suspicious to me, as well as the sword not showing niku.. and no sizes are written; could it be a modern sword made especially for iaido? Quote
Mark Green Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Hi Gang. I bought a nice Naginata off this seller. He knows NOTHING about swords. Just that they are swords, and most people in the west, will buy them, site unseen. His stuff is all real, but he doesn't know anything. He has an advisor who tells him what to list it as. I'm with most of you guys, this looks to be Gendi. I would bet on it. Mark G Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted June 24, 2009 Author Report Posted June 24, 2009 Also, you'd think this gentleman was selling a shirasaya and habaki and throughing a sword in with the deal, with how many pictures he has of the two. Quote
