Ray Singer Posted December 28, 2022 Report Posted December 28, 2022 Nobukuni Yoshikane was a smith of the Chikuzen Nobukuni school. This group was founded by Yoshisada and the school continued for generations during the Edo period. In addition to Yoshikane, other smiths from this school included Yoshitsugu and Yoshimasa, and all tended to sign Minamoto Nobukuni ___. Yoshikane was a jo-saku rated smith in Fujishiro. This is an excellent example of his work, healthy with beautiful workmanship. The blade is done in a vibrant choji-midare hamon that appears intended to reflect the style of Yoshioka Ichimonji. The hamon is wide and bright, with a thick nioi-guchi, deep ashi and yo. The wakizashi is 53.3cm, ubu with one mekugi-ana, signed Chikuzen (no) kuni Minamoto Nobukuni Yoshikane and has NTHK kanteisho to confirm the mei. The papers place this to Tenna period (1681). The blade is in excellent polish, with habaki and shirasaya. I frequently receive inquiries from collectors looking for something signed, polished, by a noted smith and papered to start their collection. This would be an excellent choice, needs no further restoration and is ready to be enjoyed. $3,500 (plus shipping & PayPal). Any questions, please email me at raymondsinger@gmail.com.
