Mark,

you will probably have more success in the translation section.

One side could be BONJI, the other looks more like KANJI. The surface of the blade looks machine polished, but that might be a photo effect.

indeed! Machine work on a traditionally made sword is very bad and will almost always damage the blade. 

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one, unless your post is really relevant and adds to the topic..
