ourmartyr1 Posted December 25, 2022 Report Posted December 25, 2022 We had a deceased realitive who owned this pass this down to my dad. I think the bamboo is newer but the blade looks old. The tang has writing on it and wanted to see if anyone had any idea. Thanks! https://imgur.com/a/ZDo837u Quote

I had someone else mention it looked possibly pre-Edo period. Quote
uwe Posted December 26, 2022 Report Posted December 26, 2022 John is right, I think. From what I can see it could be “備州長船住ロ光” (Bishū Osafune ju X mitsu). Bizen-den is also supported by the shape of the nakagojiri! Quote
ourmartyr1 Posted December 27, 2022 Author Report Posted December 27, 2022 Thank you. Any idea on the bamboo sheath, grip is it a style of sword? I am not familar with it. Someone mentioned it being pre-Edo period. Any ideas on possibly age? Quote
uwe Posted December 27, 2022 Report Posted December 27, 2022 The sword scholars here can probably answer your question more in depth…. Some measurements of the blade itself would help to determine the age more exactly. At least I can say that your blade is koto (= pre Edo period, so to say). The koshirae seems to be late Edo. Is the kojiri (end cap of the saya) made of iron? Quote
jesse Posted January 2, 2023 Report Posted January 2, 2023 It is in Zatoichi koshirae (cane sword) as the end of the saya shows. But it was probable made as a regular wakizashi. Can you post pictures of the blade? I went to your link, posted above, but only saw a few pictures of the koshirae and the rest were of the tang. Warm Regards, Jesse Quote
ROKUJURO Posted January 3, 2023 Report Posted January 3, 2023 Alex, it would help if you showed all photos tip-upwards. That would facilitate reading the MEI on the tang. And please take care that the blade never gets into contact with something hard or abrasive like an ash-tray made of stone..... Quote

Looks quiet similar to my Bizen (same issue, can't read all characters). IMO it is pre-Edo, late Muromachi Koto blade. I would say somewhere around 1550-1600. Quote
