the result you received doesnt confirm that it is Saotome, which may cast doubt for future buyers should you wish to resell.  In addition, as you stated, second generation what?  To me, thats a bad $300 spent and doesnt add any value to the set. Hoping you get more clarity on the final paper.

I try not to put all my eggs in the ‘worksheet’ basket as really the final paperwork is what counts and the worksheet is more notes that the Shinsa team takes back with them and they can do further research before issuing papers.  But I also asked my questions just to be sure.  I am glad the NTHK groups give out the worksheets as it adds to the learning, but I rely on the final papers more.

These gold menuki passed. I don't remember the attribution as I sold them at the show and gave the NTHK-NPO worksheet to the new owner. They are nice but time to move on.  :)

I submitted with the help of Chris Bowen a koto naginata naoshi wakizashi, which I believed was made by the Naoe Shizu school. The shinsa panel attributed this mumei blade to Boshu Nio Kiyozane. It gets a score of 72, which I find reasonable.

If memory serves (but I trust it less and less now… stupid memory :doubt:) last time (in 2018) it was 3 or 4 months before papers showed up.  We probably have a few more weeks to go.

Friends, does anyone know if shinsa will be present next year in 2024? Unfortunately, I had other obligations and could not attend this year. Then I have another wedding to go to during the SF show....!!!!

While I can’t answer definitively for the people that coordinate such things, Shinsa is usually done every several years (4 to 5?) at any given US location.  HUGE amount of work for those involved and probably not enough items to make an every year Shinsa economically feasible.

Wanted to ask when someone receives their shinsa papers could you please post here?  Want to know when they start coming in, and if after some time passes and mine don't arrive, know that I should perhaps follow up on them.

NTHK-NPO 2023 Shinsa Update from Chris Bowen:

Regarding the kantei-sho ("papers"), many have contacted me asking when they will receive the kantei-sho. I expect them soon, hopefully within the next several weeks. Due to the large number of them, the fact that they are hand written on hand made paper, and the age of the parties involved, it is taking longer than expected. Rest assured once they arrive I will ship them to their owners asap. Thanks for your patience.

I have received by papers at the end of October from Chris. The new owner of the menuki posted in the thread was incredibly happy to receive the papers from me a few days later. If you have not received yours by now it was part of the second group of papers written by the professional Japanese calligrapher done after this recovery from illness.

I've spoken to Chris. He said, some papers are in the first batch, others in the second. Once I get all for the individual then I'll send them together. So soon all of us will have our kanteisho

I am guessing they made the papers in order of submission time/date. I had two of (almost) the last items submitted to the shinsa team. Both were last minute purchases as all of us were packing up. I immediately ran them upstairs, and both passed. <-- sun shines on a dogs behind every once in a while.
