Matsunoki Posted December 20, 2022 Report Posted December 20, 2022 Hello from the UK. Please can anyone tell me what these kanji on Tanto menuki say? The whole sword is posted on the Nihonto forum as “Soshu Kamakura/Nanbokucho Tanto?”Many thanks for your help. All the best. Colin. 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted December 21, 2022 Report Posted December 21, 2022 Colin, these do not appear to be KANJI but HIRAGANA symbols. Upper photo: perhaps 'HO' on the right, lower photo 'A' on the right. The other HIRAGANA look kind of distorted to my untrained eyes so I cannot read them. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 21, 2022 Report Posted December 21, 2022 I played with this a bit this morning but decided to leave it to our resident experts. I think I can see 松は、あ在?and something, but left to right(?), and so which comes first and where does it start? I tried reversing them and running searches for sayings and poems, but nothing definite came up. は/ほ for example could be Ho or Bo, or it might even be Ha/wa...(?) Useless in the Bronx 1 Quote
Brian Posted December 21, 2022 Report Posted December 21, 2022 Best hope is maybe that @k morita sees this. 2 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted December 23, 2022 Report Posted December 23, 2022 Matsushima is/was reputed to be one of the three beauty spots in Japan. Presumably the morning breeze there has historical and/or poetic allusions? 1 Quote

jesse Posted December 27, 2022 Report Posted December 27, 2022 My family and I used to go to Matsushima every summer for the Obon festival and our summer home was just outside of Shiogama. Fond memories. Warm Regards, Jesse Quote
