Hello from the UK. Please can anyone tell me what these kanji on Tanto menuki say? The whole sword is posted on the Nihonto forum as “Soshu Kamakura/Nanbokucho Tanto?”Many thanks for your help.

All the best. Colin.

Colin,

these do not appear to be KANJI but HIRAGANA symbols. Upper photo: perhaps 'HO' on the right, lower photo 'A' on the right. The other HIRAGANA look kind of distorted to my untrained eyes so I cannot read them.

I played with this a bit this morning but decided to leave it to our resident experts. I think I can see 松は、あ在?and something, but left to right(?), and so which comes first and where does it start? I tried reversing them and running searches for sayings and poems, but nothing definite came up. は/ほ for example could be Ho or Bo, or it might even be Ha/wa...(?)

Hi,

Upper pic:
松しま(Matsushima).

Lower pic:
安左風 → あさ風(Asakaze),meaning is morning  breeze.

Morita san, thank you so much.

Best wishes. Colin.

My family and I used to go to Matsushima every summer for the Obon festival and our summer home was just outside of Shiogama.

Fond memories.

Warm Regards,

Jesse
